The Baha'i Faith an Introduction with Practices
John & Laurie Cunningham
July 20, 2008
5-7pm at Delphic Books
The Baha’i Faith is a relatively new religion, started in 1863 by Baha’u’llah, whose name means “the Glory of God”. Based on the idea of progressive revelation, Baha’is believe that God sends messengers periodically to renew and update the Universal Message that is common to almost every spiritual tradition. Since 1863, the Baha’i Faith has grown to a world religion, with 7.7 million members in 236 countries, and is currently the second fastest growing religion in the world, representing more than 2100 different ethnic groups.
|
The basic principles of the Baha’i Faith address the major problems that face the world at this time. Baha’is believe in the oneness of mankind, oneness of religion, universal peace, the harmony of science and religion, the equality of women and men, elimination of all prejudice, and universal education.
This evenings presentation by John and Laurie Cunningham will present an overview of the Baha’i Faith, including a brief history and the tenets of the Faith. We will share some of the teachings that address solutions to the problems of the day, and share some of the prayers and practices of the Faith that have made it such an influential force in our lives.
John and Laurie Cunningham have been members of the Baha’i Faith for 13 and 23 years, respectively, and have served on local Baha’i institutions and committees. They lead a meditation group that incorporates the teachings of the Baha’i Faith in Geauga County. |

How to Be Happy
Buddhist Teachings on How to Cultivate Happiness
with Ani Palmo, Tibetian Buddhist Nun
September 21, 2008
5-7pm at Delphic Books
Over 2,500 years ago the Buddha discovered the tools for happiness and spent the rest of his life teaching others how to achieve this state. As with everything in this world, the state of happiness depends on the law of cause and effect, a law recognized by the Buddha two millennia before the advent of modern science.

Join Ani Palmo as she shares these concrete, practical methods that anyone can use to cultivate more happiness in their own lives. She will be discussing The Four Noble Truths (the first teaching of the Buddha) and The Four Immeasurables--Love, Compassion, Joy and Equanimity--and will be giving instruction on meditation as well.
Ani Palmo, (Catherine Rybicki), was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1988, after teaching English in Japan for two years, she went to Thailand where she became deeply interested in the Buddhist path.
In 1994 she completed the traditional Three Year Retreat in France under her Lama, Tulku Pema Wangyal Rinpoche, ordaining in Nepal that same year. In 1996 Palmo completed a one-year retreat in solitude. And in 2002 she completed her second Three Year Retreat.
In late 2005 at the request of her Lama, Palmo returned to Cleveland to teach. She has since been giving classes in Buddhism and Meditation throughout the Greater Cleveland area. Visit anipalmo.org for more info.
